How to Use the Highlight Section

Highlight Section

Setup the "Highlight Section" to highlight important information to your site visitors.

The Highlight section can be placed in the Header, Page Template, Content Area, or Morefoot template areas and is available to use on Pages, Posts, and WordPress Special Pages (such as Author, Category, and Search Results).

Activate Highlight

There are different ways to setup the Highlight Section.

Activate the Highlight Section from the Templates Panel

From your WordPress Administration Panel:

1. Select the "PageLines" panel, then "Templates"
2. Select the Template Area where the Highlight section will appear
   • In the default Pagelines installation, the Highlight section can be added to the following template areas: Header, Page Templates, Content Area, or Morefoot
   • If you select the "Page Template" area, by default the Highlight section will be displayed on every page that is assigned to the type of Page Template you choose
   • If you select "Header" or "Morefoot," by default the Highlight section will be displayed on every page regardless of the Page Template
3. Select the "Type of Page" or "Content Area Type" to which the Highlight will be added
   • This selection is not available for Header and Morefoot template areas. If the Highlight section is added to these areas, the section is turned on or "hidden by default" for ALL page types, but can still be disabled/enabled on each individual page under Pagelines Meta Settings / Page Setup.
4. Drag & Drop the "Highlight" section from the "Available/Disabled Sections" into the "Active Sections" list
   • To activate more than one Highlight Section, click "Highlight Options"
   • Then click "Clone"
5. The Section Order will be saved automatically

You will now see the Highlight section on every page that it is active on. Return to individual pages to add the content to your "Highlight" sections.

Hide the Highlight section on individual pages

From your WordPress Administration Panel:

1. Select the "Pages" panel, then "All Pages"
2. Click to edit the page on which you wish to hide the Highlight section
3. On the "Meta Panel," click the "Page Setup" tab
4. Under "Individual Page Section Control," click "Hide Highlight"
5. Click "Save Meta Settings"

Because the Highlight section is displayed by default when you Enable it, you will need to use this method for every page or post on which you do not want the Highlight section displayed.

Show the Highlight section on individual pages

Hide Highlight by Default

Alternatively, you can hide the Highlight section by default and enable it on individual pages or posts.

From your WordPress Administration Panel:

1. Select the "PageLines" panel, then "Templates"
2. Make sure you have the correct Template Area selected for the type of pages you want to hide
3. Under "Active Sections" click "Highlight Options"
4. Click "Hide This By Default"
5. The Section Options will save automatically

Show Highlight Section

Now the Highlight section will be hidden by default until you select to show it on individual pages or posts.

1. Select the "Pages" panel, then "All Pages"
2. Click to edit the page on which you wish to show the Highlight section
3. On the "Meta Panel," click the "Page Setup" tab
4. Under "Individual Page Section Control," click "Show Highlight"
5. Click "Save Meta Settings"

Add Highlight Content

Add the Highlight Header, Subheader and Image to your activated Highlight sections.

Return to the page on which the Highlight appears to create the Highlight text.

From your WordPress Administration Panel:

1. Select the "Pages" panel, then "All Pages"
2. Click to edit the page on which you wish to create the Highlight section
3. On the "Meta Panel," click the "Page Setup" tab and check under "Individual Page Section Control" to make sure the Highlight Section was enabled per the instructions above
4. Click the "Highlight Meta" tab
   1. If for some reason, the "Highlight Meta" is "Inactive"
   2. Note the "Template" for the selected page (located under WordPress "Page Attributes" in the right column)
   3. Click on "Inactive on Template" to activate the "Highlight" section in the PageLines Templates panel
5. Enter the Highlight Header and Subheader Text
6. Add a Highlight Splash Image
7. Select the Image Position
   • The image may be positioned on the top or bottom of the text. See examples at the end of this tutorial to view Top and Bottom image positioning
   • Header, Subheader and Image are all optional, providing flexibility to mix-and-match all three
8. Set the "Highlight Meta" for any clones
   • Clones must previously have been activated in the "PageLines" Templates panel. See enabling clones.
   • Activated clones will each have their own tab and appear under "Highlight Meta" as "Highlight Meta (#2)", "Highlight Meta (#3)", etc.
9. Click "Save Meta Settings"

Add the Highlight content to individual posts

For all instructions in this tutorial, you may substitute "Post" for "Page" to activate, hide, show or create a Highlight Section on an individual post.

You may also create a Highlight section on WordPress Special Pages such as Author, Archive and Search Results pages.

1. Select the "PageLines" panel, then "Special"
2. Select the Special Page on which the Highlight section will appear (in this example "Author Posts")
3. In the "Select Settings" panel, click on "Highlight Meta"
   1. If for some reason, the "Highlight Meta" is "Inactive"
   2. Click on "Inactive on Template" to activate the "Highlight" section in the PageLines Templates panel
4. Enter the Highlight Header and Subheader Text
5. Add a Highlight Splash Image
6. Select the Image Position
   • The image may be positioned on the top or bottom of the text. See examples at the end of this tutorial to view Top and Bottom image positioning
   • Header, Subheader and Image are all optional, providing flexibility to mix-and-match all three
7. Set the "Highlight Meta" for any clones

8. Click "Save Options"
9. Your settings are saved; the Highlight now appears on your Special Page!

Tip: Add Highlight Content From Website

Here is a trick for adding Highlight content directly from your website.

First, make sure the Highlight section is activated in the template.

1. On your site, click on the page or post on which the Highlight section is activated
2. You will see an empty placeholder for the Highlight section
3. Click on "Set Meta"
   • This takes you to the "Highlight Meta" panel for that individual page or post

Tip: Create Multiple Highlights

To create multiple Highlight Sections in the Header, Morefoot, Page Templates or Content Area, clone the section in the Templates panel.

You can then add the Highlight text and image following the tutorial above.

From your WordPress Administration Panel:

1. Select the "PageLines" panel, then "Templates"
2. Select the Template Area where the Highlight section appears
3. Click "Highlight Options"
4. Click "Clone"
   1. The "Clones" are added to the available sections list
5. The Section Order will be saved automatically

Return to individual pages to add the content to your cloned "Highlight" sections.
